It’s so easy to become overwhelmed these days. With the combination of work, family and your social life too, it can become difficult to fit it all in. Our lives can fill up with ‘clutter’ easier than you think, almost as quickly as the dreaded kitchen drawer.
I love this quote by Bruce Lee:
It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential.
Simplifying some aspects in your life can be like de-cluttering that drawer – getting rid of the unwanted things can make room for things you want and need to do.
There are so many great ideas for ‘simplifying’ your life, and below are just a few examples.
1) Eat well and exercise
I like this analogy, if you fill your car with low-grade petrol and only switch the engine on once a month you don’t expect it to run very well, it’s the same with your body.
Eat well and exercise regularly and you’ll be feeling great in no time relieving stress and clearing your mind.
2) Capsule your wardrobe
This is something that I tried over the last winter season. Looking back, how many clothes do you have in your wardrobe taking up valuable space that either don’t fit or you don’t like anymore?
Clearing out your wardrobe and selling your unwanted clothes on eBay, or even donating them to charity, is a great way to pass them on and clear some space. You’re going to cut down the time it takes to pick an outfit and simplify your wardrobe.
3) Streamline your online life
I’ll admit it, we all spend too much time online now, it’s more of a lifestyle than an activity. So it makes sense to streamline our online lives as much as possible to see the things we actually want to see.
Unsubscribing from all those irrelevant emails and unfollowing those random accounts on Twitter and Instagram will make your social media life simpler and much more enjoyable.
Bookmarking the sites you use the most or even setting up a RSS reader (I like Netvibes) so you can see all the posts from your favourite websites at once.
4) Live debt free
Living in debt adds stress to our lives. In the case of a mortgage for a dream home we can afford to pay off on then maybe this is a debt we can happily live with. Otherwise, if we can’t afford it now maybe now is not the time to have it. A great person to follow for tips and tricks is Dave Ramsey, he is American but his core principles can be implemented anywhere.
If you’re not sure where to start with simplifying, think about the big areas of your life, maybe where you spend the most time, and start with that. Looking at these areas will have the largest impact and you’ll see the biggest results.
Then you’ll be free to enjoy your extra space and time for yourself!
